INTERVIEW WITH MARTYN FITZGERALD OF “HANDSOME”.

Q. Martyn, you are a long standing scene Queen and party make-it-happener…tell us something we don’t know about you.

A. I met Jimmy Savile. Twice.

Q. Pies or beer?

A. Pies. I love a good crust.

Q. There or Here?

A. Here obviously. The grass is never greener no matter how tempting it looks.

Q. Straight or Queer?

A. Babes, do you really need to ask this one?

Q. What is Handsome? Why did you start it? Who is it for? Who does the door?

A. Handsome is a club night for homos and anyone else who’s into house music. I started it with Toby (Grimbitch), now of Berlin address, so that we could listen to the kind of house US flavoured house we were into. An old friend Felix does the door – he’s perfect as he’s off the scene so doesn’t know any one.

Q. Why East London?

A. Most of my friends live there and the first party was at “Visions” in Dalston – the type of gritty basement I love that hadn’t been done up since the eighties.

Q. How do you feel about the direction London is going in culture wise?

A. London is amazing for culture. We have some of the best museums, libraries, theatres and galleries in the world. The worry is it will become too expensive here and push out the grass roots stuff that has made the place great.

Q. Do you think Gay London is being reduced?

A. I wouldn’t say reduced, but it’s changed as it always has. We’ve lost some important venues but new parties are always springing up.

Q. So you will party nonetheless and keep the music pumping and the boys humping?

A. I’m going to be the Bruce Forsyth of clubland.

Q. What is next for Martyn and what is next party wise?

A. Right now I feel a cup of tea coming on. Party wise I’m gearing up for Handsome Hallokween for which you were the stunning poster boy, Ted. So thank you. 🙂
