BERLIN
As discussed with my housemate last night, there is something so incredibly satisfying in sitting and listening to a music album from start to finish. And even more so if it is a Lou Reed one.
Lou Reed’s “Berlin” definitely comes into my top 5 albums of all time (thus far).
He has a way of saying things so plainly that hit you with such power. With songs like “Men of Good Fortune” and lyrics such as “The rich wait for their father’s to die, The poor just drink and cry”, the blatancy drags your jaw open and one is left thinking how had I not managed to articulate this point so simply before. Quite frankly, Lou Reed doesn’t give a shit, he will sing “it”, regardless of others might say or think – knowing that the truth matters more.
The music itself hits you equally as deep; well masturbated guitar fuzz mixed with twinkly, plonky piano, punctuated firmly with percussion oozes sweetly into your core.
Like the lyrics, nothing extra or flowery is added. It’s all just pretty enough to draw you in and then slam the message in your face.
This album along with some Patti Smith and Hole got me through a very tough winter depression showing it’s holistic properties too. If an artist can make you feel then some vitality and inspiration will follow.
So if you’re in a rut, give Lou Reed a go!
And just listen to the ensuing lyrical orgasm.
Social science has never been so edible.
