REVIEW
The Turner Contemporary gallery in Margate is an important landmark for the art scene and an even more important public toilet serving fish and chip tourists and locals in need of a pardon.
I visited the gentlemen’s toilet, as there was no agendered option, to find a tall white space, allowing customers to not feel claustrophobic even though the width was actually not that wide.
One of the urinals was out of order, however, it was clearly and neatly signposted and it wasn’t overflowing with wee which is good. There was also another free urinal so there was no need to awkwardly wait around trying not to look at peoples willies.
I decided to use the sit-down cubicle as this gives me time to really soak up the toilets atmosphere.
The first thing to grab my attention was the super space aged tissue holders. Frosted glass wrapped in brushed steel offer a modern but inoffensive aesthetic to the reasonably sized cubicle.
I had no reason to hold my nose and in fact I could comfortably enjoy my toilet time, as there was good ventilation and if anything it smelt quite fresh.
The only thing that really bothered me at this stage was the horrifically uncomfortable seat; which was far too high and lumpy making release more of a task than it needs to be. Especially if one is processing a full chip butty.
The paper itself was surprisingly unabrasive down below considering it initially felt cheap to the touch; and the flush inconsistent yet strong when it did work on the 3rd try.
The highlight of these toilets most definitely came with the hand washing ritual. Having lathered and rinsed, you are greeted by a hand dryer THAT ACTUALLY WORKS!! Fucking genius! Although one may expect this to be the most basic of considerations, I’m sure we can agree that in reality this does not always follow through.
Overall I had a positive experience in the Turner Contemporary’s public loo’s. For a public toilet it fulfilled it’s primary purpose with a few bonus points for fresh smell and tall ceilings.
I shall be visiting again.
